GN Pasta.JPG

We all know that Tommy the Tomato’s ultimate dream is to be a Tomato Sauce. So we made Tommy the Tomato the show of the sauce with just a few ingredients. This will have every Ninja MMMMMMMMing for Marinara. Plus parents should know that Tomatoes contain all four major carotenoids: alpha- and beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene. Carotenoids all act as high antioxidants! Lycopene is even known to be the highest in antioxidants and is found in awesome abundance in Tomatoes. So get squishing these vibrate and deliciously rosy garden treats!

WARNING, THIS IS A NINJA NOTICE: Green Ninjas never put uncooked Tomatoes in the fridge. This will make them less vibrant tasting and mushy.

Prep Time: 35 mins or 1.5 hours (depending on if you use fresh Tomatoes or roast your own)

Servings: 5 servings, 1/2 cup per serving

    Ingredients

    • 2lbs Whole Plum Tomatoes (around 9 Tomatoes) or 28 ounce jar of Chopped Plum Tomatoes in water or juice only. They don’t all taste the same so we have recommended brands that have great flavor and additive free
    • ½ a small Yellow Onion
    • 2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
    • 3 large Garlic Cloves
    • 4 tablespoons Nutritional Yeast
    • 2 pinches Salt (a pinch is ⅛ teaspoon)

    Tools

    Roasting Tools

    • Roasting pan

    Sauce Tools

    • Kids safe knife
    • Cutting board
    • Bowl
    • Stirring spoon
    • Tablespoon (tbsp)
    • Medium pot
    • Blender (optional)

    Directions

    Roasting Tomatoes Directions

    • Set oven to 425 degrees

    • Place washed and rinsed Whole Plum Tomatoes on a tray

    • Drizzle just enough Oil so you can massage into the Tomatoes skin (1 tbsp roughly)

    • Add a few pinches of Salt sprinkled on the Tomatoes

**IMPORTANT** ask an adult to assist putting the Tomatoes in the oven as well as when removing the Tomatoes.  We recommend putting the oven light on so you can watch your Tomatoes sizzle
    • Place in the oven till they crack and slightly turn brown, 30-45 minutes (can be longer depending on the oven)

    • Remove Tomatoes and allow to cool for at least 30 minutes, enough time so you can squish without burning yourself

    • 1 Tomato at a time, place them into a bowl and start squishing the tomatoes so they turn into a sauce. Have an adult pour the juices from the pan into the bowl. There is a lot of yummy sweet flavor on the bottom of your cooking tray

    Sauce Directions

    • Chop your Garlic and Onion and put aside (the onion can be as small as you would like)

    • On medium high heat add 1 tbsp Olive Oil into your medium pot for about 30 seconds, then add your Onion and Garlic

    • Move the Onions and Garlic around in the pot and cook till they get slightly brown, have your bowl of tomatoes close (this part happens quick from brown to burnt so WATCH closely)

    • Have a parent help and slowly pour your tomatoes and juice into the pot with a pinch of salt (be careful, pouring liquid into a pot of hot oil can splatter so do not put your face over the pot)

    • Bring to a simmer on medium high heat (you will see small bubbles dancing on the top of your sauce)

    • Reduce the heat to medium. Keep covered stirring occasionally for 30 mins

    • Remove from heat and stir in Nutritional Yeast

    • At this point you can let the sauce cool for 20 minutes then pour the sauce in a food processor for a smooth not chunky sauce. But ask for help because the sauce will still be hot

Sprinkle your favorite Nut Cheese on top and enjoy. Below are some fun types of pasta we love.  ***Shown Above :Sweet Potato Noodles, you can get at any asian market. Soak them in the morning and they will only take about 3 minutes in boiling water. ***
